I’m Not Comfortable with That

by Jimmy Pruitt

I love this story. Jesus is walking on the water to get to the other side of the lake, no big deal. Instead of stopping for a chit chat with his boys, Jesus just keeps on walking, after all, walking on water might take a tad bit more concentration than walking on a road, I suppose.

How do the disciples respond to this amazing display of the supernatural? They freak. It’s the typical response of most people, even today, when Jesus shows up in a way we don’t expect. If we’re not comfortable with it, then it must not be Jesus. Really?

Jesus seems to take delight in blowing my personal preconceptions out of the water by showing up in ways I’m not comfortable with, or by speaking through people that “freak me out” a little… or a lot. Moral of the story?

Jesus may bring you what you need in a package you don’t necessarily want. In your disdain, you may just miss what you’ve been asking for.

He (Jesus) saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. About the fourth watch of the night he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, because they all saw him and were terrified. Matt 6:48
